New legislation has been laid out which will make microchipping of pet cats compulsory, like it already is for dogs. Owners will have until 10 June 2024 to microchip their cat. Hopefully this will mean it is easier to reunite stray or injured cats with their owners.
What do you need to do?
- If your cat is already microchipped, check your contact details are up to date with the microchip company. We cannot do this for you, but can help if you don’t know which company your cat’s microchip is registered with.
- If your cat is not microchipped we can implant a microchip at their next check-up, or you can book an appointment with one of our nurses to have your cat microchipped. We use mini-chips so the needle is as small as possible; the chip itself is about the size of a grain of rice. The cost for a standard chip implantation is £18.50.
- If you don’t know if your cat is microchipped we can scan them for a chip at their next appointment, or you can arrange to bring your cat in for us to scan them for a chip at no charge.
