Cat & Dog - Artificial Tears

Why has my veterinary surgeon prescribed this medicine?

Artificial tears are tear substitutes used to moisten and lubricate the eyes when the animal's tear secretion has stopped or is reduced as in keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye syndrome). There are different agents that are used as artificial tears such as carbomers, hypromellose and polyvinyl alcohol. Some animals appear to respond better to one substance rather than another. Your veterinary surgeon may need to try different preparations to find the most satisfactory for your pet. Your veterinary surgeon will need to monitor your pet's response to treatment.

Artificial tear preparations are not available as veterinary preparations. Your veterinary surgeon may ask you to sign a consent form so a preparation licensed for humans can be used to treat your pet.
