Why has my veterinary surgeon prescribed this medicine?

Emodepside is used to control roundworms. It is available as a combination spot-on product for endoparasites (parasites that live inside your pet, unlike fleas, for example, who live on the outside of yuor pet).

It is important that your pet is treated for worms regularly. Your veterinary surgeon will advise a deworming programme for your pet.

How does this medicine work?

Emodepside stimulates receptors at the parasites' neuromuscular junction resulting in paralysis and death of roundworms.

How do I give this medication?

• Apply this medication to your pet as directed by your veterinary surgeon. READ THE LABEL CAREFULLY.
• DO NOT apply more medication than directed and DO NOT apply more often than directed.
• Have a reminder system in place to indicate when the next dose should be applied.
• Wash your hands after applying this medication. Wear latex gloves when you are applying this medication to either a lot of animals at one time or if you are a woman of child-bearing potential.
• Avoid contact with the animal until the medication is dry. Recently treated animals should not be allowed to sleep with people, especially children.
• Ensure treated animals do not groom each other until the medication is dry.
• Do not bathe or shampoo your pet until the medication is dry.
• In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice immediately and show the package, leaflet or label to the physician.

What if I miss giving a dose?

Quite often, a single dose of this medicine is effective. Measures should be taken to prevent reinfection.

How do I store this medicine?

Keep this medicine out of reach of children. Store this medicine in a cool, dry place at room temperature. Store away from heat, open flame and direct sunlight. Do not store this medicine in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink or in damp places. The medicine may break down if exposed to heat or moisture.

Potential side effects

• Although a drug has possible side effects, it does not mean that there is necessarily a high risk of any of these occurring. Your veterinary surgeon may weigh your pet. Tell your veterinary surgeon if your pet is less than 8 weeks of age.
• Your pet may salivate and vomit if the animal licks the application site soon after the medication has been applied.
• There are very few side effects when this medication is given at the usual dose. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinary surgeon.

Possible drug interactions

• Make sure to tell your veterinary surgeon what other medication you are giving to your pet.
• Quite often your veterinary surgeon may prescribe two different medications, even if a drug interaction may occur. In this case, your veterinary surgeon may vary the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely.
• Contact your veterinary surgeon if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.
