Cat - Methoprene
Why has my veterinary surgeon prescribed this medicine?
Methoprene is classified as an insect growth regulator. It does not kill adult fleas. Your veterinary surgeon has prescribed this medication for the control of the fleas. If your cat already has a heavy flea burden, your veterinary surgeon may also prescribe an agent that kills adult fleas. If the cat's environment is infested, an environmental spray may also be used.
How does this medicine work?
Methoprene mimics the action of naturally occurring juvenile hormones and prevents metamorphosis of the larvae to the adult stage of the parasite.
How do I apply this medication?
- Methoprene is available as a collar that is effective for 12 months.
- Attach the collar correctly so that two fingers can be inserted between the collar and your cat's neck. Cut off any excess length.
- READ THE LABEL CAREFULLY.
- Have a reminder system in place to indicate when the collar should be changed.
- Wash your hands with soap and water after handling the product.
- Tell your veterinary surgeon if you have more than one animal in the household.
How do I store this medicine?
- Keep this medicine out of reach of children.
- Store this medicine in a cool, dry place below 25°C. Store away from heat and direct sunlight.
- Do not open the package until ready to use.
Potential side effects
- Tell your veterinary surgeon if you think your cat may be pregnant.
- The collar should be removed if your cat's skin becomes irritated. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinary surgeon.
Possible drug interactions
- Make sure to tell your veterinary surgeon what other medication you are giving to your pet.
- Quite often your veterinary surgeon may prescribe two different medications, even if a drug interaction may occur. In this case, your veterinary surgeon may vary the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely.
- Contact your veterinary surgeon if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.
