Cat & Dog - Pancreatic Enzyme Supplements

Why has my veterinary surgeon prescribed this medicine?

Your pet needs pancreatic enzymes to help digest protein, fat, and starch in the animal's food. Supplements are used to provide additional pancreatic enzymes when your pet produces insufficient amounts such as in exocrine pancreatic insufficiency.

  • Give this medication to your pet as directed by your veterinary surgeon. READ THE LABEL CAREFULLY.
  • The amount of medication given depends on the weight of food to be digested and the severity of the condition in your pet. Your veterinary surgeon will tell you how much medication to give. The dose may need to be adjusted.
  • Try to give this medication at about the same time(s) each day and try not to miss giving any doses.
  • DO NOT give the pet more medicine than directed and DO NOT give more often than directed.
  • DO NOT stop giving this medication without consulting your veterinary surgeon. Contact your veterinary surgeon in advance if your pet requires a repeat prescription.
  • Thoroughly mix the medication with your pet's food. Crush tablets before mixing with your pet's food. Break open capsules and thoroughly mix contents with your pet's food.
  • Wash your hands after handling this medicine and avoid inhaling the powder.

What if I miss giving a dose?

Give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose, and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give the pet two doses at once.

Potential side effects

  • High doses of the medicine may cause diarrhoea and stomach cramps. Contact your veterinary surgeon if these side effects occur and are troublesome.
  • Powdered medication may cause irritation around your pet's mouth. Make sure the powder is thoroughly mixed with the food.
  • Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinary surgeon.

Possible drug interactions

  • Make sure to tell your veterinary surgeon what other medication you are giving to your pet.
  • Quite often your veterinary surgeon may prescribe two different medications, and a drug interaction may be anticipated. In this case, your veterinary surgeon may vary the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely.
  • The effectiveness of pancreatic enzyme supplements can be reduced with antacids.
