Cat & Dog - Sucralfate

Why has my veterinary surgeon prescribed this medicine?

Sucralfate is used to treat ulcers of the stomach and intestine. It is usually used in conjunction with other medicines.

Sucralfate is not available as a veterinary preparation in the UK. Your veterinary surgeon may ask you to sign a consent form so a preparation licensed for humans can be used to treat your pet.

How does this medicine work?

Sucralfate binds to proteins at an ulcer site thereby providing a protective barrier against acid-pepsin (stomach acid and other digestive enzymes) attack. This barrier protects the ulcer from the acid of the stomach, allowing it to heal.
